Stolen Dreams by Christine Amsden

Christine Amsden has been writing fantasy and science fiction for as long as she can remember. She loves to write and it is her dream that others will be inspired by this love and by her stories. Speculative fiction is fun, magical, and imaginative but great speculative fiction is about real people defining themselves through extraordinary situations. Christine writes primarily about people and relationships, and it is in this way that she strives to make science fiction and fantasy meaningful for everyone.

At the age of 16, Christine was diagnosed with Stargardt’s Disease, a condition that effects the retina and causes a loss of central vision. She is now legally blind, but has not let this slow her down or get in the way of her dreams.

In addition to writing, Christine teaches workshops on writing at Savvy Authors. She also does some freelance editing work.

Christine currently lives in the Kansas City area with her husband, Austin, who has been her biggest fan and the key to her success. They have two beautiful children.

Edward Scot and Victor Blackwood have despised one another for nearly a quarter of a century, but now their simmering hatred is about to erupt.

When Cassie Scot returns home from her sojourn in Pennsylvania, she finds that her family has taken a hostage. Desperate to end the fighting before someone dies, Cassie seeks help from local seer Abigail Hastings, Evan Blackwood’s grandmother. But Abigail has seen her own death, and when it comes at the hand of Cassie’s father, Victor Blackwood kills Edward Scot.

But things may not be precisely as they appear.

Evan persuades Cassie to help him learn the truth, teaming them up once again in their darkest hour. New revelations about Evan and his family make it difficult for Cassie to cling to a shield of anger, but can Evan and Cassie stop a feud that has taken on a life of its own?

Conclusion to the Cassie Scot series.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Cassie herself. She came to me in a flash of inspiration one morning as I was playing with my (then) 9-month-old daughter. I had taken a writing hiatus (something I think can be very good for writers experiencing writer's block), but knew that whatever I wrote next, I wanted it to involve a truly special character. But what could I do that hadn't already been done in fantasy? A new magical power? Or wait … what about no magic power at all? That was my lightbulb moment. As soon as my daughter went down for her nap, I wrote the first paragraph more or less as it exists today … but for a day or two, Cassie was Nick. (It didn't take me long to decide I didn't want to write a first person story from a male perspective.)

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Which draft? :)
After my lightbulb moment, I spent two months brainstorming. I knew I wanted to write a series (although I originally aimed for seven books, not four) and I tried to plan, not just for the first book, but for the long road ahead. Once I started writing the first book, I penned that first draft in less than two months. Fastest first draft I ever wrote! But that was in 2009 and the book didn't come out until 2013. In the end, each book in the series took an average of a year to write, with a lot of back and forth revision across the entire series. Since all four books were done before the first one was released, I feel confident that the overall arc is solid.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Revising. I used to think the rough draft was the best part, but as I jot down those first raw ideas it looks less and less like the dream and more and more like a mess. The revision stage cleans up the mess and reveals the true nature of the story … never exactly what I dreamed but always something magical.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Marketing. And as much as I've loved being able to put out all four books in a series in just over a year's time, I will be relieved when this is all over and I can get back to the writing I love. There are parts of it I enjoy – like connecting with fans (and I never get tired of reading glowing reviews) – but I have the soul of an artist, not a businesswoman or saleswoman.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I'd love to be famous myself! Not because I want to be rich (you don't write to get rich), but because I want people – lots of people – to connect with my work.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Salad dressing – but it can't be more than a year old. My husband goes on a rampage about twice a year, throwing out any food or medicine in the house that has passed its expiration date.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The story is over for Cassie, but two of her friends got too big for footnotes in her series and are getting single-volume spin-offs of their own. Madison's Song is finished and undergoing editorial review. It should be available in 2015. Kaitlin's Tale is a work in progress. After that … I don't know. I'll just have to wait for inspiration.

The Lycan Hunter by Kelsey Jordan

Kelsey Jordan is the author of The Lycan Hunter, the first book in her Gardinian World series. Though she has a preference for all things paranormal and romantic, Kelsey admits she just writes what her muse demands of her. It’s less painful that way. When she isn’t enjoying the momentary benefits of playing god to the many characters that live in her head, she can usually be found curled up with a book, killing something in a video game, or spending time with her family. At some point in the day she is probably drinking more than her recommended dose of coffee, but don’t tell her that. She doesn’t care about recommended servings.

As a Texas native and self-described Air Force brat, Kelsey now lives in Georgia with her husband and their tutu-wearing minion. Book 2 and 3 of the series will be published by Booktrope Editions late Summer/Fall 2014.

When Alexis James arrives at her first assignment in months, she anticipates the danger and violence rife in her calling as a Lycan Hunter. What she doesn’t expect is a handsome, blue-eyed wolf saving her life and kidnapping her. Surrounded by the enemy, Alexis must not only survive her prisoners but the bonds of a different sort that begin to form against her will.

Mikko Kyran was chosen by the gods to lead his pack, and he has made it his mission to end the eight thousand years of war plaguing his people. The Alpha never suspected that the key to the prophecy ending the Forever War would be held by a smart-mouthed, sexy Hunter determined to kill him.

Can two people from different worlds set aside everything they know about one another long enough to survive retribution from the Hunters, the pack, and the gods? Or will their differences start a war that neither can win?

Written with intensity and depth, The Lycan Hunter is the first in a thrilling new series.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A) The Lycan Hunter came about because of a song (Howling by Within Temptation) that I was listening to one night while brainstorming. Once the chorus kicked in, so did the basic premise for the book.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A) It took me roughly ten months to write The Lycan Hunter.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A) The thing I like the most about writing is the ability to live in another world for 300+pages. I guess the same thing could be said about reading. J

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A) Deadlines. If I feel too rushed I shut down creatively.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A) I want to be Betty White. I love the Golden Girls and she is a genuinely funny woman.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A) I love this question. I had to check, but my oldest item was--I had to throw it out--a jar of chili sauce with garlic which I used when I made some spring rolls almost six months ago.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A) I don’t like to be pigeonholed into one thing, so in the future I intend to branch onto high fantasy romance, scifi and finally a standalone thriller that I have planned.

Despite the fact all hell’s about to break loose on his watch, he can’t resist the opportunity to insert himself into her earthly assignment. Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Juli D. Revezzo: Hi, Pembroke! Thanks for having me. Oh dear. What inspired this book? This is a little embarrassing but way back when, when I was a little thing, I went for a short horse ride. I was fine the whole way but when the horse stopped, I fell right off. *Lol* Somehow this all mixed around in my head and I thought, now what would happen if Ianthe (my heroine) had to set up an event at a horse ranch….It just seemed to fun to also make her a faery godmother who can’t do anything right. The ranch also had the side benefit of that I couldn’t resist giving Ianthe at least one horsely-incident. You’ll have to read CHANGELING’S CROWN to find out what that is, though! ;)

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Juli D. Revezzo: It took about two years from its initial inception to what became CHANGELING’S CROWN.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Juli D. Revezzo: Creating the worlds and living vicariously through my characters. I mean, I can’t fly, or toss around faery dust the way Ianthe does, not in real life, but through my characters? That, to me, is fun.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Juli D. Revezzo: Revisions. They’re necessary, of course, but…. Ugh.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Juli D. Revezzo: For one day? I don’t know. Since you only have one day you wouldn’t be able to accomplish much so, maybe a famous singer at a big concert. Why? Because at one time, I wanted to be a famous singer.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Juli D. Revezzo: The oldest thing in my fridge? We have an old free-standing thermometer that, if I remember correctly, came from my husband’s grandmother. As far as food goes, not too much. We’re about to go stock up for the week.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Juli D. Revezzo: I’m currently working on several things: another fantasy romance, I’m also plotting another New Adult PNR and hashing out the next book in my paranormal fantasy Antique Magic series (http://amzn.to/1kW77oX ). And I’m kicking around a (we’ll see how this goes) historical romance. So, I am keeping busy! Thanks again for having me, Pembroke!

Amanda Meuwissen has a Bachelor of Arts in a personally designed major from St. Olaf College in Creative Writing, and has been writing and posting fiction and blog articles online for many years, including maintaining the website and blog for the digital marketing company Outsell. Amanda spent a summer writing screenplay script coverages for a company in L.A., and is an avid writer and consumer of fiction through film, prose, and video games. Nathan Grier’s dark fae bounty looms overhead. As he faces the very real threat of becoming a slave to the bounty’s owner, his brother Jim uses his changeling abilities more and more trying to save him. Every changeling throughout history turns evil once their powers manifest, meaning time may be running out for both of them as Jim nears True Awakening.

Fae hunter and incubus, Sasha Kelly, is prophesized to save Nathan, but while Nathan has embraced his feelings for the other man, he fears their time together will be cut short—either from his impending fate…or Jim’s.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Changeling is the sequel to Incubus, the second book in the trilogy The Incubus Saga. I was first inspired for this story years ago by this web comic I discovered about a teenage boy with an incubus imaginary friend. I couldn’t seem to make a story idea of my own work at the time, and from experience I knew I had to let it sit. Then one day, while watching an episode of Supernatural, the idea for my own incubus character, Sasha Kelly, appeared before me fully formed. The rest of the story fell into place with my love of fae and Arthurian lore, and male relationships, but it was the first time a character had ever revealed themselves to me so fully, so suddenly.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
That’s hard to answer, since I wrote the first draft of The Incubus Saga from 2007-2009, and then proceeded to rework it for publication. Finally, when I found BigWorldNetwork in 2011, I decided to release it serialized there first, which has led to the first two books, with the third and final set to release next year.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
No limits. You can create any story you want, about anything. Always wished you could read about vampires in space? You can write it yourself. You’re not limited by reality, or what’s possible with special effects, nothing, because it’s ALL possible.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Transitions. I hate when I get so excited about certain scenes, and then feel like I’m slugging along writing the in-betweens. That’s the biggest challenge: making every scene as fantastic as your favorites.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Nathan Fillion, because he’s living the dream. He’s this awesome, down to earth, but also very geeky guy that everyone loves, and he gets to act, attend comic conventions, do voice work, and just generally exist as one of the coolest people ever.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A jar of yeast. I’m sure my husband will get around to making bread again…someday.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The third book in The Incubus Saga will be out next summer – Sidhe. After that I’m very excited to begin work on a new Young Adult/Gay Paranormal Romance story about a boy who becomes a vampire his senior year in high school. My brain is buzzing with it already! Coming soon…

Let's Play a Zombie Game, Week 4: Answers

The list was:

Water Filtration System
Antibiotics
Container of Fuel
Rope

The answers:

1.  Water Filtration System - again, you can only survive for 3 days without water, and you may not have access to a safe source.  This will allow you to make any water safe for consumption.

2.  Rope - this can be used for a myriad of things, from setting traps to catch food or to get yourself in and out of a safe place where zombies can't reach you.

3.  Antibiotics - although these won't be helpful against the zombie virus, there are a myriad of other infections that could take you out.  These can come from bacteria that get into your system from something simple as a scratch.  There's no way to fight an internal war and an external one, so keep yourself healthy.

4.  Container of Fuel - this could be helpful if you have a vehicle that requires fuel or for starting fires, but only if you have a vehicle or something to light it with.  With all the other items that could potentially be more helpful, this one is better left behind.

Amber’s succubus desires are driving her, as well as every man within a five mile radius, crazy – and, Irix, the sexy incubus sent to tutor her, isn’t helping one bit. Determined to find some balance in her life as well as get away from his tempting presence, she escapes to visit a college friend in New Orleans.

But the Big Easy is anything but peaceful. Two powerful witch covens are battling for control of the mighty river and the potent ley lines that run through the city. Amber discovers her half-elven heritage may just resolve their differences, but the covens have other, more lethal, ideas. She knows she can restore the elemental energy to balance, but it’s not easy to play peacemaker when her succubus side wants to drown the whole city in a tide of lust.

The tensions between the covens aren’t her only trouble. There’s nowhere Amber can run to escape the siren-call of her demon nature, and nowhere she can run to escape the seductive incubus who won’t seem to take “no” for an answer.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Amber was a secondary character in the Imp Series, and I found myself intrigued by the idea of a half-succubus/half-elf. How could she reconcile two very different parts of herself, and what ethical compromises would she need to make? Throw in a sex demon love interest, and I just had to write it!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I started Demons of Desire in March, so three and a half months from outline to publication. That includes four weeks for editing and coding, so the actual writing went quickly!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Seeing all the imaginary worlds and characters in my head come to life, and sharing all of that with others.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The effect it has on my rear end! My day-job involves sitting at a computer, and so does writing, so it’s been impossible for me to keep fit. I’m thinking I need to look into one of those treadmill desks.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Mae West. Snappy and sassy as an actor, she also wrote risqué plays and was once incarcerated for corrupting the morals of youth. What a crazy fun life!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I had to go look. It was a half-empty jar of salsa that was wedged far in the back. Expiration date was four months ago. Ick! It’s now in the trash.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m currently working on book 6 of the Imp Series – titled Angel of Chaos. This winter I hope to complete and release a spin-off novel to the series called Three Wishes. There will be more of Amber’s story coming in 2015 – book two (release date late spring) is titled Sins of the Flesh.

Surviving Zombies Workshop

On Wednesday, I had the opportunity to go to the Platte County Library in Wheatland, Wyoming, to present my zombie workshop to the teens.  It was a blast!  I had a lot of fun hanging out with them.  There were 14 kids there, and from what I could tell, they enjoyed me being there also.

As part of my presentation, I show various clips of films to highlight survival techniques.  One of them happens to be a clip from Night of the Living Dead when Ben and Barbara are barricading the house.  Well, mainly Ben because Barbara has completely lost her mind.

Anyway, I explained to the teens what the movie was, then mentioned it was in black and white.  One of them immediately says, "Are you serious?"  Like they couldn't believe a movie would be in black and white.  It was hilarious!  Night of the Living Dead was before my time too, but it was never shocking to me that it wasn't in color.  It must be a generational thing.

Again, I have to say how enjoyable it was hanging out with the kids.  They had some great comments and ideas about the zombie apocalypse.  A big thanks to the library for having me!

The photos are courtesy of the Platte County Library.  Thank you!

The teens engrossed in filling out their order of importance supply worksheets.

The Spirit and The Shadow by Thomas Lavalle‏

I have been advised against announcing that I am a first-time author – that it is basically asking a reader to take a chance in my book even though I have no track record. I have no history in fiction writing, never won any awards, and never took a literature or writing class (outside of basic 101 level college courses). While not advised, it is the truth, and as honest as this bio is, so is my writing. My name is Thomas Lavalle. I am a first time writer. I also surf, read comics, and I’m a dedicated father and husband. If you’re interested in paranormal suspense - take a chance and check out my book, it’s awesome!

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Thomas: Brandon and I were looking for a creative outlet. We both have interests and hobbies that we had not been able to play with due to responsibilities to family and careers. So we decided to make time and try something new. I have seen Brandon’s art and I showed him some of my writing and pitched him with the idea of creating our own illustrated book. We did not want to make a traditional graphic novel, but something else – something that more evenly balances the words with the art. Brandon had never drawn serial art before and I had never attempted writing something this “big”. But we set our sights high, and the result in our first book!

Brandon: When Tommy told he was writing a book, and would like to add an artistic component to it – I was immediately interested. Even more so after reading the initial draft.

Thomas: In terms of the story itself, I guess at the time we were both caught up as much as everyone with the vampire craze. But we were each left unsatisfied with a lot of the emphasis on vampire romance and vampire teenage angst. We wanted to tell a more adult story and something suspense driven. Also, I didn’t want to write a story “about vampires”. It actually started as a murder / mystery ... adding vampires (with all their mythology) along with other supernatural elements helped raise the stakes of a story that would be small in a normal world, and turn it epic in our supernatural universe!

Brandon: Building on what Tommy speaks to above, we wanted to create a world and mythology that, for me, held more true to the dark overtones in more original stories such as Bram Stoker’s Dracula. After first reading Stoker’s book in middle school I was very interested in the historical figure, Vlad the Impaler, and I think his brutality and carnage shine through in some of the art.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Thomas: I’m the type of writer that has to story-map my entire work beginning to end. So I probably cranked out the entire first draft of the series (we have planned a trilogy) in about 6 months. This first draft, admittedly, is not very good. What it does is hit all the beats and layout the progression of the story. Brandon then starts providing the illustrations for me to add to the story. I then revise my story and characters based on the art. The integration of all the art took about 12 months. We then spent 6 months in editing, illustration revisions, review/feedback, and final edits. So two years overall ... and that while working 9-5 (if we’re lucky) and keeping our families happy!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Thomas: Writing is only one part of the creative process for me. I enjoy the entirety of the process. Everything from the first days of brainstorming and ideas to the last days of final edit. I love the collaboration with Brandon and Jenna (our editor). To me, that is what makes the experience. Writing, for me is a lonely exercise. That is the one part that is totally mine, and done by myself. I need that and enjoy it, but the part that is exhilarating is taking those pages and giving them to Brandon and Jenna to illustrate, revise, develop, enhance and publish!

Brandon: It is a creative release that adds another facet to my life which I don’t have through my day job.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Thomas: Proofreading. I absolutely have no patience or interest in this part of the process ... but am totally aware of the importance.

Brandon: When the image/idea in your mind does not translate how you want on paper.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Brandon: Any professional big wave surfer. I’ve been an avid surfer for over half my life, but restrict my surfing to waves that fall into the more mortal realm. It would be awesome for a day to experience one of those XXL days pushing 100’.

Thomas: Taylor Swift. Why not? Lol ... I don’t know …How about George RR Martin, so I can find out how Game of Thrones will end – at his writing pace, winter is never coming.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Brandon: A 2008 bottle of Stone Arrogant Bastard.

Thomas: I just found an old bag of shredded cheese in the fridge this afternoon that my 18 month old daughter pulled out and was running around with – so gross – and now my garbage smells like a dead cow.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Thomas: In an unexpected twist, Taylor Swift appears at the end of our next book carrying a bag of rotten cheese to fend off a vampire attack!

Brandon: Books 2 and 3 of the Spirit and the Shadow. The next two installments move away from the more detective thriller in the first book and dives more into the details of the vampire lore and mythology – adding another unknown element (See last page of the book 1) that will be nothing short of epic!

Thomas: I’m about half-way through the rewrite of the Book 2 script and Brandon is working on the initial sketches of some new characters. He also has some new software that he is playing with to help advance the art and style of the book to be in line with where the story is going and the bigger world our characters are entering!

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I wanted to tell the story of the terror a community would experience if two teenaged thrill killers and an escape serial killer were abducting innocent victims and killing them at will. In addition, there were two tender romance stories that needed to be told.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I started PROFILE OF TERROR (Book Two of the Profile Series) in the summer of 2013, right after I released PROFILE OF EVIL (Book One). But life got in the way and I was diagnosed with thymic cancer in August of that year. Fast forward after surgery, chemo, and radiation and I was able to complete and release the book in May 2014.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love when plot and characterization comes easily and creates a flow. This doesn't always happen, but when it does, it feels amazing.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
My least favorite thing about writing is when I find I'm spending more time on marketing my books than on actually writing them.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Singer Tina Turner! I've always been a huge fan. How cool would it be to sing and dance like she does?!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
You're outing me and I hope my daughter doesn't read this. LOL. I just found a storage container of pasta with sauce that had furry, green mold growing on top. Ick! I'm notorious for forgetting what is in the fridge.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I am in the research phase of my next book PROFILE OF FEAR (Book #3 of the Profile Series), which will be released in 2015. The book involves human trafficking so I am reading a lot of information on how traffickers operate. The information is interesting but terrifying at the same time.

Let's Play a Zombie Game, Week 3: Answers

The list was:

Backpack
Running Shoes
Duct Tape
Pocket Knife

The answers are:

1.  Running Shoes - if you have a good pair of running shoes, you can outmaneuver and outpace your opponent.  It's hard to do much of anything if you're feet hurt, so make sure your shoes fit right and offer support.

2.  Duct Tape - what can't this do?  In addition to using it in a myriad of ways, it can be used as body armor.  Wrap this around your exposed limbs to protect yourself from bites.  Just make sure to attach it to your clothes.  It'll take your skin off if applied directly.

3.  Backpack - a good way to store and carry all your supplies. It would make moving from one place to another more convenient.

4.  Pocket Knife - while it seems that this should be higher on the list because it's a weapon, it's not a very effective weapon.  You would have to get awfully close to a zombie to make this effective, increasing your chance of getting bit.  It could be helpful in sharpening sticks into weapons, but the other items on this list are more helpful in ensuring survival than this one.

Connecting Strangers by Rachel Carrington‏

I started writing years ago, and my first attempt was a contemporary romance that will never see the light of day. I think I may even have thrown it away by now. It was absolutely horrific as I knew nothing about well…anything to do with writing.

After that, I started writing fantasy romances about wizards and wizards, and once those took off, I segued to paranormal romances (hello, vampires and ghosts) and romantic suspense.

I also write articles for various magazines, including The Writer’s Journal, Writer’s Magazine, Writer’s Weekly, Writing for Dollars, Absolute Write, Freelance Writing.com, and Funds for Writers.

I’m fortunate to make my home in historical Charleston, South Carolina. Beautiful city. Beautiful people. When I’m not writing, I love to read, watch Bones, Castle, Blue Bloods, and Hawaii Five-O, create videos, keep Target in business, play visitor in my city, and drink lots of coffee.

Getting close is dangerous…

He’s too close, and I start to fidget, needing to keep my hands busy so they won’t grab hold of his shirt. Because that’s what they want to do. Draw him closer. So I can Inhale his scent. Taste his skin.

I didn’t run because I was in an abusive relationship; I ran because my soul was being crushed. I’d forgotten how to live, how to be happy. Running out of gas in a small town, I catch the eye of the local sheriff when the very last thing I want is to come under the scrutiny of the police. I left my boyfriend with blood on my hands, and I know as soon as the wound heals he’ll come looking for me.

Adam Madison draws me to him so easily I can’t even pretend to fight. And the closer we get, the more combustible we become. I’ve never experienced such passion or power. My need is as great as his, but I’m sure he’ll walk away from me once he knows my secret. No other man would stay.

I’ve had enough complications in my life. I’m not looking for more, and that’s exactly what Adam is—a sexy, magnetic complication with secrets of his own. And with my ex on the hunt, I can’t risk bringing him down with me. But he won’t leave…even when vengeance could kill us both.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Unfortunately, domestic violence is something that has been in my family so I’m all too familiar with it. I wanted to write about not only the escape but the road to recovery. But I knew I also wanted to do it in a way that didn’t just focus on the abuse. I wanted the heroine to grow beyond the anger and to learn to live and love without being scared of being hurt. So I created Emily. Though she’s terrified of what lies behind her at first, she’s an overcomer, and I think the readers will see more of that as the series continues.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I wrote the first draft in three months.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Bringing unique characters to life and telling their stories. I love creating an individual out of my imagination and giving them words that resonate with readers.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The trimming. During the editing process I usually end up trimming thousands of words, and most of the time, it’s painful. I want to keep every word I wrote, but I know it’s not feasible. While the words sounded fine when I wrote them, they don’t always belong. Still, letting them go is my least favorite thing.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
This is tough because, honestly, I don’t know that I would want to be anyone else. The idea of living a famous person’s life might be intriguing, but I wouldn’t want to deal with their challenges any more than they would probably want to deal with mine.

Celebrities face a never-ending flash of cameras, a lack of privacy, and rumors galore. I’m thankful to have the anonymity that allows me come and go as I please without having to worry about whether my hair looks okay or my makeup is on right. I think there’s something to be said for just being an average joe…or Jolene. :-D

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I just did a massive cleanout and started fresh with everything so all the items are five days’ old.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m working on the second book in the Discovering Emily series, and I’m about 50,000 words into the first book in romantic thriller series. I also have three books that are complete and ready to be released, two of which are paranormal and one which is a fantasy.

A Good Week

This week was a good week.  Nothing overly exciting happened, and I was incredibly busy with freelance edits and editing The Ifs Return for the publisher, but it went by fast.

I crossed a bunch of agents off my list this week.  Their window of response had closed.  It was bittersweet as that meant several less agents were interested in my work, but it gets me one step closer to knowing where the book will be published.  That doesn't make me sad.  At least it has a home.  And I'm already brainstorming a whole bunch of promotional ideas that should be really fun.  Of course, I'd do those no matter who put the book out.

I still have one agent interested--I think.  He hasn't given me a concrete rejection, and when I email him updates (which happens incredibly rarely), he says "Thanks for the update."  On one hand, it's a great response because I assume that means I'm still being considered, but on the other, it's irritating because I want a concrete answer either way.  Sigh.  I guess I just relish in the moment that he hasn't rejected me outright.

Speaking of the nonfiction zombie book, I got it back from the editor and sent it off to the people I interviewed for their approval/input.  I gave them until the end of the month to get it back to me, so I'm sooooo close to being done done.  It feels so freaking good!

As I mentioned up top, I'm also working on edits for The Ifs Return.  I just need to finish those up and send them back to the publisher.  I will get that done today.  I feel bad because I've had it for two weeks now, but I wasn't kidding when I said I've been busy.

My goal this coming week is to work on Dealing with Devils (the sequel to The Appeal of Evil).  I'm close on that one.  Maybe five chapters left before my first draft is finished.  To me, that's the hard part.  I like editing and rewriting--that means I actually have something down on paper!

I feel like this month is flying by super fast.  I feel like I haven't accomplished everything I want to accomplish, but I've done a LOT!  All I can do is keep plugging along, and that's what I plan to do.

Happy Saturday!

Secrets of Hallstead House by Amy M. Reade‏

Amy M. Reade is a debut author of romantic suspense. A native of upstate New York, she grew up in the Thousand Islands region and was inspired by the natural beauty of that area to write her first novel, Secrets of Hallstead House. She now lives in New Jersey with her husband, three children, a Bouvier des Flandres named Orly, and two rescued cats who refuse to answer to their names of Porthos and Athos.

Upon graduation from Cornell University and Indiana University School of Law, Amy practiced law in New York City, but soon discovered that her dream job was writing. In addition to volunteering with school, church, and community groups, Amy is currently working on her second novel, set in the area around Charleston, South Carolina.

Though Amy lives within sight of the Atlantic Ocean, she is partial to the blue waters of the Pacific and spends as much time as possible on the Big Island of Hawaii, which is the setting of her as-yet-unwritten third novel.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I grew up in a town close to the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands, and I want to share the beauty of that place with everyone. When I was thinking about the plot it never occurred to me to set the story anywhere but the Thousand Islands.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
That first novel took quite a long time, almost two years. I only wrote sporadically until I decided to become serious about it and try to get it published. Now I write every day and my second novel only took about six months to write. It helped having a deadline!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
There are so many things I love about writing, I don’t know that I can choose a favorite, but I’ll try. I love the challenge of coming up with a story that is believable, engaging, and suspenseful, set in a place that readers will want to visit once they’ve read the book.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
My least favorite thing is waking up in the middle of the night with questions twisting in my mind about the plot and reminders in my sleep-fuzzed brain of things I need to say or include in whatever story I’m currently working on. I can’t turn off the writing part of me. Come to think of it, though, maybe that’s actually a good thing!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would be Beatrix Potter because I want to see what the English countryside looked like when she lived there so long ago. I’ll bet it was beautiful, even more so than it is now.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
The oldest thing in my fridge is a bottomless jar of pickled jalapenos that we must have bought from a place like Sam’s or BJ’s. You couldn’t even buy a jar that big in a regular grocery store.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
My next book is set on a plantation outside Charleston, South Carolina. Its working title is The Ghosts of Peppernell Manor and I don’t have a publication date for it yet. I hope to get the date soon, though, and I’ll certainly post it on my own blog and website!

Answers that she must find… A truth that he can’t escape…And ghosts up to no good…

Being a demi-god has its privileges. For the young nymph, Starling Jackson, it means the gift of seduction and more than that—near immortality. Yet, when her life is filled with spirits, immortality may not be all it’s cracked up to be.

With the help of her bodyguard, Jasper Gray, and secret books left to her by her late-mother’s friend, she may have found the answer to all of her problems. First, they must find a way to locate the books in their enemy’s hotbed all while staying safe and most importantly—without falling in love.

In the battles between the head and the heart and enemies and friends, tough decisions must be faced—and sacrifices made.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
This was the fourth book in the Nymph Series, so it came as a natural progression from book 3, Winter Swans. I have a feeling that my readers are going to love Book 5. 

Q) How long did it take you to write?
This book took me a little under four months from start to finish, but I had it pretty well mapped out before I began writing.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love the freedom. I’m not a person who likes being confined to an office. Plus, I have to admit, that I LOVEEEEE talking to my fans. There is nothing better than meeting someone who loves something that I’ve written.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
It’s a tough business at every level; you are always fearful of rejection, sometimes people can be cruel, and you must always keep steady because this is a business—so when people are cruel or rude to your face, you have to take it with a smile.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I think I wouldn’t want to be a famous person—they are under so much pressure to be perfect— instead I would rather be a rancher… someone who works hard, plays hard, and gets to spend their day in the sun.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Ooooo…. Good question. It’s probably a bunch of celery. I think I can remember buying it with the intention of eating it, but… I don’t like celery.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I am busy writing away. I have a paranormal collection coming out August 4 called Extraordinary Love with nine other Crimson Romance authors and this fall I will have another Christmas Anthology. Of course, I’m also working on a new novel… J I’m an author who has books come out about every 4-6 months.

Thank you, Pembroke, for having me on your blog! I loved your questions!

Forbidden Blood by R.L. Kenderson‏

R.L. Kenderson is two best friends writing under one name. Renae wrote her first poem in third grade and learned she might have a knack for this writing thing, while Lara remembers sneaking her grandmother’s Harlequin novels when she was probably too young to be reading them and always knew she wanted to write her own.

When they met in college, they bonded over their love of reading and the TV show Charmed. What really spiced up their friendship was when Lara introduced Renae to romance novels, and when they discovered their first vampire romance they knew there would always be a special place in their hearts for paranormal romance. After being unable to find certains storylines and characteristics they wanted to read about in the hundreds of books they consumed, they decided to write their own.

They both live in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where they’re a sonographer/stay-at-home mom and pharmacist by day and sexy author by night.

You can email them at rlkenderson@zoho.com.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A) We love paranormal romance, and we love vampires (and other paranormal characters) who are born, alive, can have offspring. Rather than vampires that are the living dead and are changed into a vampire (or other paranormal characters) by being bitten. Also, we wanted to read a story about a vampire and something we can't give away because they would spoil the story. After not being able to find what we wanted, we wrote our own.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A) Our book basically took two years. We started in 2012 and we took some breaks between multiple revisions to try to find an agent before we decided to self-publish. We also did things like critique groups and webinars in between. Once we decided to self-publish, we had to wait six months for the editor we wanted to be available. So all that adds up to about two years.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A) That you get to create the story you want. You get to decide what happens to your characters and if you don't like the ending of the story, you can change it. Also, it's nice to be able to work from home and choose your own hours.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A) That you know how the story is going to turn out. You don't get to be surprised like the readers. Also, you can doubt yourself sometimes. Because reading is so subjective, there is no cut and dry right or wrong way so you sometimes have to wonder if your stories are good enough.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A) Probably Scarlett Johansson. She looks amazing, is super busy with tons of movies so it seems like her career is really on track, yet there isn’t constant drama in the media regarding her personal life. It seems like she really has everything together. Plus, she seems like such a normal person, a nice, girl next door who would be fun to be friends with.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A) Renae - The oldest thing in my fridge is probably onions. I usually buy several at time so that I always have them available for cooking.

Lara – Whatever I have forgotten about because I didn’t want to eat it. Probably lettuce that needs to go in the garbage. I try to pretend that I like salads, but I really just do not.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A) Later this year, most likely December, we are planning to release our second book, Forbidden Heat. It is the second book in the Forbidden series. Next will be Forbidden Temptation, which will be Kenzie and Sawyer's story sometime in 2015.

Let's Play a Zombie Survival Game, Week 2: Answers

The list was:

Handgun/ammunition
Canned Food/Can Opener
Long-sleeved Shirt and Pants
GPS

The answers are:

1.  Canned Food/Can Opener - while you can survive for slightly longer without food than you can water, it is still essential to live.  It also gives you energy and the ability to run from zombies.

2.  Long-sleeved Shirt and Pants - while being trapped in the zombie-apocalyptic world, you'll need to protect yourself from the elements.  Imagine how hard and painful it would be to fight off zombies with a horrible sunburn.

3.  Handgun/ammunition - I'm pretty sure this one doesn't need an explanation, but it could be used to kill zombies or hunt for food if your canned food runs out.

4.  GPS - while the idea of having a GPS to map your location is enticing, it's impractical.  There's no guarantee you'll be able to connect to the satellite or have a power source to run it.  It would just be a waste of space in your kit.

Unplugged

This past weekend, the spouse and I had a chance to get out of town and enjoy nature.  The boys were in Seattle with their grandma, so it was just the two of us and the dog.  I left my phone at home and just enjoyed the outdoors.  Sometimes it's so lovely and good for the soul to unplug and get back to nature.  Here's some photos from our trip.

Awesome rock pile that was surprisingly difficult to climb.

There was still snow up there!  It was awesome.  Ryder (the dog) really enjoyed cooling off in it.

We snowmobile in this meadow.  It's astounding how different it looks when it's filled up with snow.

Another shot of the meadow we ride in.  I had no idea there was a stream running underneath it!

We traveled to the top of a hill and found an abandoned mine.  After talking to a volunteer fire fighter who was also putzing around the area, we found out it was the Queen Mine.

The was the edge of the road as we were coming down the mountain.  This picture doesn't do it much justice, but it was really steep.
