Some things change...

It’s been three years since Kaylee Sawyer has been home—home to the alcoholic mother she can’t handle, home to the painful memories of her sister Ella... and home to the guilt she’s carried for years. About to enter her final year of college, she is determined to come to terms with the mess of her past—and to ignore the guy whose single kiss has been tattooed into her mind forever.

Some things stay the same...

Dylan McKay is still golden haired and dangerous, the flame Kaylee was always afraid to touch for fear of getting burnt. But despite the damage that’s been done, she finds that she still can’t stay away from the one person who accepted her the way she was.

Some things are meant to be.

Kaylee is no longer the innocent girl she once was. Though tragedy ripped them apart before, one look from Dylan brings all of the old feelings rushing back. Torn between her past and her future, she’s not sure if a person can ever truly go home again.

But Dylan doesn’t plan to let her go without a fight.

A fresh start...

It’s been three years since Serena King learned to say no—no to the boys that were a desperate cry for help, no to the extra weight she put on in self defense, and most of all no to the abuse that has haunted her since she was fifteen. Now a sophomore in college, all she wants is to be normal. The last thing she expects is a guy who can make her want... make her want everything.

A new guy...

Alex Blackthorn is a bundle of contradictions, a sexy dark haired badness who goes slow... deliciously slow. And despite the iron will that has gotten her through the last few years, Serena finds herself unable to ignore the heat that sizzles between them whenever they’re together.

A dark past...

Serena never thought she could be involved in a relationship, but Alex makes her long for things she thought were out of her reach forever. When he finds out her secret... when he finds out what she did to keep herself sane... will he still want her, or he will treat her just like everyone else?

And Alex has a secret of his own.

Welcome to Adelheid, CT. Freak central. Unofficial capital of legal preternatural creatures in the Northeast. Focal point for anti-preternatural sentiments in the United States.

Who would ever guess that this otherwise sleepy New England town houses many of the most powerful beings known to exist?

* * *

In "Cameron's Law," meet Sadie Stanton, vampire poster girl for preternatural rights. She's just trying to start a business to help the community, but when vampires and werewolves start attacking each other, she gets thrust in the middle.

In "When Forever Died," Dakota is a rare shifter and hunter who has lived a long, hard life. But the past never sleeps and two simultaneous cases are going to test the personal defenses she's built over the centuries.

In "Voracious," the life D wants isn't what it seems. He certainly never planned on the fangs, but he's going to need a lot more than the pointy teeth to survive the first weeks of his new existence.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A) The original ideas for Adelheid came to me a long time ago, so it's hard to remember what exactly inspired me. Really, everything in life inspires me, and you'd be amazed at how many odd little details in life can inspire something in a paranormal story.

I think I always liked the idea of preternatural creatures that are just like everyone else. It amuses me to think of a vampire having to do the laundry, or a werewolf dealing with shedding season. This is the kind of thing that makes me enjoy Adelheid in all the small ways!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A) That's hard to say, since this book is actually three books bundled together, and thus wasn't written in one straight shot. But it generally takes me a few months, once I start writing the first draft until the finished copy. So ten to twelve months, put together, for the bundle, I think.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A) Stories, stories, stories... I love stories! It makes me so happy to have these weird ideas jump around in my skull that I have the chance to let free and share with people. I love to entertain myself when I write, and I love the idea that my writing may entertain others.

It's said that writers are often loners and that writing is a solitary pursuit, and that's often true, but most of us really don't write alone: we write to entertain or enlighten the people who read our works, so thinking that someone will read and enjoy my works is one of my favorite things, right alongside creating interesting (I think so, at least) characters and bringing them to life.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A) I can't do it fast enough! Honestly, how long it takes to write a story can drive me crazy, but there's only so many hours in the day and so much energy in my brain and hands.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A) If I could BE anyone? Oh my, what an interesting question... I don't honestly know! Can I be a fictional famous person, lol? I'd love to be Richard Castle! I'd take being a crazy, fun, millionaire writer who gets to live his books.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A) Haha, uhm, I'm not sure. I can say that nothing in there is too old, because I have a three year old son who goes hunting in the fridge on his own. Have to be careful of what's in there!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A) A lot more Adelheid! Seriously, I just released book four and I'm finishing the plot outline on book five, so I'll be writing it soon. I have three more "solid" plans for books, with several more floating around.

A fan also gave me the idea to do a southern states version of Adelheid, now that I've relocated from CT to AL, and I'm planning to do it as a spin-off to the series. So, lots more preternatural tales from both sides of the states.
There's also more books in my romance series planned, and an epic fantasy trilogy that is slowly being written.

Quinn and Declan enjoy having sex together, but love sharing a woman more.

After months of searching, they’ve lost hope of ever finding a permanent third to complete them.

Then they meet shy, reclusive Hannah and everything changes. The sexual energy between them is incredible and the men soon realize that no other woman will do. They decide to confront her at the department’s summer kick-off party.

Will the straight-laced Hannah be open to a three-way relationship? They’ll have to do everything they can to convince her that two men are better than one.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Last year, I was searching around on Amazon for something quick and fun to read at the beach. I had a hard time finding anything. It was then that I decided to write a story to fill this niche. Two Are Better Than One is a short story about being young, having fun, and self-discovery.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Two weeks. Like I said earlier, it’s a quick story. I wanted to write something a person could read in an hour or two while at the beach. Once I had the concept, the story flowed rather easily.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
World building. Whether it’s paranormal creatures or contemporary cities, I love developing rich worlds and placing interesting characters inside of them. If done correctly, a story will develop organically from this.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The waiting. It seems like as a writer, you’re always waiting for something. Even with Self publishing, you are waiting for cover artists, editors, formatters, or a distributor to upload your book. I’m rather impatient and the waiting is always the hardest part. (There’s a Tom Petty song in there, somewhere, lol.)

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Sheesh, this is a hard question. Life for me is pretty good right now. I’m a stay at home mom and a full-time writer. It’s hard for me to picture myself doing anything else. Perhaps I’d become a wealthier writer who could afford a luxurious office with a view of the ocean. I love the sounds and smells of the sea and having a house on the water would be like a dream.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
LOL! Probably my tub of cottage cheese. It’s been in there about ten days. Every time I go food shopping, I clean out the fridge, so there’s never anything really old or expired in it.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’ve got lots of things happening behind the scenes, lol. I just signed with Deidre Knight of the Knight Agency. She’s been fantastic. Through our partnership, I’m hoping to improve my writing and bring it to readers I couldn’t reach on my own. Exciting times!

For those who like paranormals, the second book in my Warlock Mating Chronicles series with Siren Bookstrand is coming out in September. I also might have some good news soon about a pair of stories involving some mischievous incubi. Look for those to come out next year.

If you like contemporary erotic romance, then you’ll be happy to know that I’m going to be releasing two new novellas set in the same world as “A Little Bit Reckless.” All together, these three books are called the “Small Town Seduction Series.” Look for the two new stories to come out close to Christmas. I’m also working with my agent on a project proposal for a brand new erotic series. I can’t say much about it now, but I hope to have some good news for everyone by the end of the year.

And lastly, I write new adult books as Ava Conway. My latest work, Hollow, is a little like Girl Interrupted, a little like Breakfast Club. I hope to have good news about that soon, as well.

“And they say Death will live among them in the guise of a child....”

Grappling with her new identity as “Bridge,” a being meant to herald the end for all of humanity, isn’t even Allie’s biggest problem. She’s also coping with a whole new set of rules around her seer marriage, as well as the power-hungry Rook she helped put in the White House, who is currently doing his best to start a war with China.

Then the boy appears. A sociopath with all of the energetic markings of Syrimne, a highly dangerous telekinetic seer who killed thousands during World War I, he doesn’t appear to have aged in one hundred years.

Worse, he thinks Allie belongs to him.

About the Allie’s War Series:

An urban fantasy paranormal romance set in a unique, gritty version of Earth, populated by a second race of beings called seers, the Allie’s War series centers on the relationship of a strong female protagonist, Allie Taylor, and her antihero guide, Dehgoies Revik. Falling into the new adult genre of books, the Allie’s War series takes place in a modern version of Earth you’ve never seen, that spans centuries along with the lives of its main characters, the seers, and the wars they fight with themselves and their human allies and enemies, (steamy sex scenes in parts!).

Character Interview

1. What is your name? How would you describe yourself?
John Sebastian Taylor. I’ll be turning thirty-three in July. Describe myself? I don’t know. I’m around six-foot, one hundred and eighty pounds...well, less now, probably, because I’m out of shape and I lost a lot of weight while Terian had us in those mountains. Hazel eyes. Dirty blond hair. Kind of a mutt white guy. I’m not sure what else you want? I mean, do people really care what I look like?

2. Where were you born? Where have you lived since then?
I was born and grew up in San Francisco. I pretty much lived there my whole life, apart from a few years spent in Seattle for college. Since then? Well, I live in India now. That’s kind of a long story, though. Well, or a really short story. I got kidnapped by this totally insane seer and locked in an underground prison in Russia somewhere. Then, after my sister’s husband got us out of there, we went to England, and then here. We now live in Seertown, which is in the Himalayas in Northern India. In fact, we live in the compound of Vash, who’s like the head guy around here. Well, other than Allie, that is...I guess technically, she’s in charge now. See what I mean about the long story part of things? I suppose I could have just said ‘India’ and left it at that...

3. Tell us about your friends and family. Who do you surround yourself with? Who are you closest to?
Well, back in San Francisco I had a decent number of friends, I guess. I taught martial arts, so had a lot of buddies from there. I had a boyfriend. Yes, I’m gay. Get over it, please...I really hate when that becomes ‘the thing’ people want to talk about. Since I’ve been here, in India, I’ve been getting to know some of the seers, but it’s kind of a long slog...mostly they just hit on me, because, yeah, they’re seers, and have ‘issues’ when it comes to sex or whatever. I really like Vash, the head of the seers. Revik, my sister’s husband, is probably my best male friend...and then there’s Cass, who pretty much lived at our house when we were kids. My best friend is still probably my sister, Allie, though. My parents adopted her when I was four, and from what they tell me, we were pretty much glued at the hip from day one.

4. What is your biggest fear? Who have you told this to? Who would you never tell this to, and why?
At this point, my biggest fear is that a psychopathic seer will lock me in a cage and torture me for like six months...wait, that already happened. I guess my biggest fear is that something like that could happen again. Not just with Terian, but with Seer Containment, the military, other seers, whatever. I think my sense of ‘safety’ is still pretty much nonexistent after the events of the past year or so...ever since my sister got tagged as a seer and a terrorist.

5. Have you ever been in love? Had a broken heart?
Only once for both. I think I was starting to fall for Trey, the guy I was seeing in San Francisco before everything went down with Allie, but I wasn’t totally there. My first head-over-heels thing, I was fifteen. He was a friend of mine in martial arts, and he was straight, so yeah, not much was going to happen there. Pretty much devastated me, though...I’m not exactly a ‘big dater’ type. Allie seems to think I’m totally incompetent in that regard. Maybe she’s right.

6. What is in your refrigerator right now? On your bedroom floor? In your garbage can?
Uh, what refrigerator? This is India, man. There’s a ‘fridge in the main compound, I think, but there are brown-outs all the time up here, and there’s not a ton of stuff that you need to refrigerate, because there’s no way to transport it up here in the first place. Generally, it’s shop, cook and eat up here. There are exceptions, but not many. On my bedroom floor...uh, books? Probably some clothes. I sleep on a mat on the floor, so pretty much everything in my room is on the floor, in a manner of speaking. I have a stack of books in there, I know, from Vash...most of them on seer philosophy, but a few history books, too. My garbage can...jeez. I have no idea. See the thing about the ‘fridge. That stuff is really different out here. I imagine I have paper and some other stuff...?

7. It’s Saturday at noon. What are you likely to be doing?
Probably out in the markets of Seertown with Allie and Cass, drinking coffee or playing pool or just walking around and looking at things. We go hiking a fair bit, too...there are trails all over out here...and we’ve taken rickshaws to the valley to screw around, visit the kind of scary zoo here and some of the shrines and a few of the neighboring human towns. In San Francisco, I’d be teaching a sparring and weapons class at Saturday noon, for brown and black belts. But yeah, that life’s pretty much over...

8. What is one strong memory that has stuck with you from childhood? Why is it so powerful and lasting?
Well, I probably would have answered this differently a year ago, but the one that sticks out now, the one I dream about sometimes, after everything that happened with Terian and whatever else, is what happened with our Uncle Stefan out at the pig barn when Allie was like six or seven. I don’t remember all of the details that well, but I know that somehow, she threw our uncle...who was a really, really big guy...into the wall of the barn, and started threatening him...something about the runt pigs. She’d just read Charlotte’s Web and asked him what he did with the runts, so he told her and she just...freaked. I blocked it out afterwards, but I think that’s the first time I knew...I mean really knew, deep down...that Allie was different from other people. I don’t think I knew enough back then to think ‘seer’ or anything, but I knew she wasn’t like other people. I think that’s when I started trying to hide that fact from outsiders, too.

9. What were you like in high school?
(Snorts) Jeez. I was a total nerd in high school...like, the nerd other nerds avoided. I had the big coke bottle glasses, I was so skinny I looked ill half the time, I was shy...the whole nine yards. Allie used to have to rescue me from lockers and dumpsters a lot. That’s why I started studying martial arts, at least in the beginning. My dad didn’t argue about paying for lessons or anything when I asked...even though I know now that they must have been pretty expensive. I don’t think he knew how to help me, because he seemed relieved when I asked about joining a kung fu class in the Richmond that I’d heard about. My mom wasn’t crazy about it at first, but once she realized it wasn’t all about me pummeling people or them pummeling me, she chilled out. When I got older she used to come to matches and so on.

10. When did you go on your first date? What was it like?
Wow. Yeah. Awkward. I was like twenty, I think...and he asked me out, of course. Allie practically forced me to go, even though the guy was cute and everything, the whole thing just terrified me back then, mostly because I had absolutely no idea how anyone expected me to act. You’d think it would be easy to be gay in San Francisco, but somehow I still managed to make it hard. I honestly still wonder if Allie set me up...meaning, if she got the guy to ask me out in the first place...but I never wanted to ask her. Maybe I was afraid she’d tell the truth. Still, even with me acting like an emotional cripple, it was an okay date. Awkward, like I said. We only went out a few times, but it did kind of break the ice for me. The next guy I dated, we were together for six months. Which yeah, isn’t that long, but for me, that was huge. I think I still figured everyone saw through the kung fu thing to “Bug,” the kid who got thrown in dumpsters and covered in spitballs in class. I was shy to the point of acting autistic, I think...but yeah, I finally got over it.

“Don’t try to be my hero. Don’t care about me. Don’t let go.”

Twenty-two-year-old Beatrice Stevens lives to dance. Two years ago she walked in on the picture of horror: after stabbing her mom 34 times, her father killed himself. She found his corpse still clutching at her mom’s, determined not to let go of her even in death. Now Beatrice freaks out if she’s hugged, loomed over or receives attention from daddy-type guys. Unless she’s dancing—the one thing that feeds her soul and saves her time after time.

Anthony Gowl wants Beatrice from the moment she bumps her adorable nose into his chest. That desire turns into a burning need after he sees her dance. But he’s the overprotective type—he can’t help it, it’s part of him ever since his sister ODed seven years ago. His savior complex makes him the perfect opposite of what Beatrice needs.

But she can’t seem to shake him. He’s both scary and exciting, even when he kneels at her feet. And the closer he gets, the more that toxic waste in her soul threatens to explode.

Warning: Contains scenes and language suitable for adults.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?

You know how you read stories of ‘broken’ people, people with issues who somehow get over them? I thought, what if I’d tell a story about people with issues who don’t get over them, do their best to ignore them (like we all do, right?) and somehow manage to live anyway? The actual characters came to me after listening obsessively to a song, but the particular type of relationship and how they solve (nor don’t solve) their issues were born out of that ‘what if’.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A week, actually. It was my fastest story so far. Once I started writing, it just kind of wrote itself.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Telling stories about the characters that come to me, I think. It’s about the stories too, of course, but I think for me it’s more about the characters–about people.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Waiting. It’s my least favorite thing about any activity. In the case of writing, waiting to hear from someone about a submission, or from an editor, or from readers… a lot of waiting. If it were up to me, things would always happen without any breaks. I guess it would make for a hellishly rapid pace of life, though. But what a ride!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Hmm… maybe I’d like to be someone not so famous, like the head of CIA or FBI or something. Can you imagine how much inspiration I’d get for my future characters? :D

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
You know how life is filled with mysteries? This will be one of them, for you and me both, lol. One should be afraid of a writer’s fridge, that’s what I think. I know I am, haha.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More stories about ‘different’ characters, people who can’t make things work by default or who have issues that torment them and don’t solve them by the end of the book or the series. Stories about imperfect and therefore beautiful people like us, I guess. I love writing them

The Moonlight Serenade By Kate Hinderer‏

In a nutshell: Writer. Blogger. Journalist. Marathon runner. Social media enthusiast. Beer drinker. Avid YA reader. Traveler. Chicago native. Milwaukee resident. Music fanatic. Fashion lover. Oldest of nine.

Writing has been in my soul from the very beginning. In grade school I started my own local paper for the street I lived on. In middle school I wrote for the school paper and loved any English writing assignment. I started writing novels in high school. At the time my friends were the characters, the setting was almost always Regency England, and I scratched the story into lined notebooks.

Now, I have a journalism degree and a dozen various business writing gigs under my belt. I’ve lived in a handful of US cities including Milwaukee, Chicago, Boston, St. Louis and New York. I pen a personal fashion and lifestyle blog, ModlyChic.com, and continue to write about commercial real estate.

My first book, Aurora Undefined, was published in 2011. The Emerald Isle, the first Fascination Island book, came out during the summer of 2012, at which time I immediately began writing the second book in the series.

Next up . . . stay tuned! I’m working on a new contemporary novel as well as the third book in the Fascination Island series.

Determined to someday sing on the stage in New York City, Collette takes an internship at the luxury resort on Fascination Island.

While she plans to hone her craft by singing nightly on the stage of the Moonlight Serenade restaurant, she never expected to be pushed outside her comfort zone.

Shy and reserved, she is challenged to step outside herself and release the inner diva. When Falcon comes along, sparks fly and secrets are revealed.

Before long Collette is forced to make life-changing decisions that will impact her future in ways she never even imagined.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
This is the second book in the Fascination Island series. When I was nearly done with the first book, The Emerald Isle, I felt the need to write another book that would look closer at Falcon. He was a personal favorite secondary character and apparently a reader favorite as well. From there the story of Collette and Falcon blossomed quickly in my head. I couldn’t let their story go unheard.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I started the book in August 2012 and finished writing the first draft in March 2013. In between that I moved halfway across the country and started a new job. I hoped to write and publish the story faster, but this is what I managed with the time allotted.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love crafting a story. I spend weeks thinking up scenes, mentally examining characters, watching people in real life and analyzing their words and actions. Through all of this characters are formed in my head – the fun and exciting part is getting that on paper.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
All the edits. As an indie author it’s hard, really impossible, to put out a error proof ebook. I go through the whole manuscript several times with a fine toothed comb and then I have an editor do the same. And still there are things that get by multiple eyes.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Um… Is it weird that I have never once thought of this? I guess if I had to pick one I would go for Suzanne Collins when Hunger Games was being turned into a movie. That must be such an amazing moment for any author who watches her book turn into a best-seller and then a blockbuster hit.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A bottle of blueberry flavored honey. A friend gave it to me saying it was amazing on pancakes. I beg to differ!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’ll likely write a third Fascination Island series book. But I’ve started to work on a new contemporary fiction YA book that I am really really excited about. The whole story line and main character dropped into my head fully formed a couple months ago. I’m excited to get it on paper.

Long ago, the Vampire Elite began capturing members of another race of immortal beings, the Amiti, forcing them to become their blood suppliers—bloodstock—and locking them in underground cells, where they are treated like livestock. Now, the few remaining free Amiti are making a final attempt to strike back. The Queen of the Amiti has been proclaimed a traitor and executed. Her death makes possible the rise of a new Queen, her young daughter Arianna, who becomes the last hope of her dying race.

Arianna totally embraces her mission and is ready to fight for her people to the last drop of her blood but encounters an unexpected challenge—the vampire King Tor. The Amiti Queen and the King of the vampires are drawn into a trap of love where each has to make the ultimate choice: to kill their loved one or risk the extermination of their people.

Vampire Elite is an epic story of a bitter conflict between two peoples, and the effect of that conflict on everyone living in its grip. The characters are driven to love and betrayal, vengeance and sacrifice in a world without easy black-and-white answers.

Based on an ancient Egyptian legend, packed with action and intrigue, Vampire Elite will pull you into the entrancing world of immortals and open new portals into their hidden universe.

Sugar Baby – A young man or woman who receives financial compensation and/or gifts in exchange for companionship, often including favors of the sexual nature.

Sugar Daddy/Sugar Mommy – A wealthy, often older man or women, who provides financial compensation and/or gifts to a Sugar Baby in exchange for companionship.

"Sugar Baby is told in quick, sizzling scenes that can be savored chapter by chapter or in one delightful sitting. Powell engages the reader with a bouquet of sensory inputs; Marissa with her vanilla scent that "tastes like peaches," Brittney's satisfied grunts and moans, and a plethora of psychedelic colors, and sensations at the hotel. Powell also creates layered characters who aren't just there for great sex but who also have dreams of their own." --Clarion Review

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I’ve always been interested in the idea of a Sugar Baby. I had been hearing more and more about these web sites where business men hire college girls to hang out with. Initially it sounded like a form of prostitution, and that didn’t excite me too much. Later I read an article in Playboy about an older married couple who hired a Sugar Baby. It was more than a sex thing. The husband and wife were interested in finding a person they could get comfortable with. They wanted someone to hang out with and share their love with. It’s definitely taboo, and I thought, “Hey, there’s a way better story here than this little magazine snippet portrays.” I began to imagine what it would be like if my wife and I tried to meet a Sugar Baby. That’s how the story was born.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Once I had the beginning outlined in my mind, it took me about a week and a half to put Sugar Baby down on paper. Once I get going, I generally write pretty fast. It’s the proofreading and editing that take forever.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
It’s an escape. Not that my life is horrible or anything. But I create this universe in my mind and I live there as the story plays out. It’s wonderful, especially when I’m writing a story like Sugar Baby. Let’s just say that I get myself pretty worked up with some of the juicy scenes.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The problem with creating these stories is that I almost convince myself that they’re real. They’re better than real life—so vivid—so when my protagonist is feeling down or conflicted, it’s often something that I’m feeling as well. When I was writing my story, Benjamin, I actually made myself depressed. It wasn’t just that I feeling what my character was feeling, I was reliving childhood experiences. My wife was even worried about me. I became very introverted and flat. It’s dangerous in a way. I’m throwing myself down the rabbit hole.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I should probably be someone with some political influence and try to fix something. But that would be completely boring to talk about. I’d be Jessica Alba for sure. After exploring myself in front of a mirror and rubbing warm oil all over my beautiful body for a few hours, I’d listen to myself speak and whisper “Aaron, you’re such a talented writer. Seduce me with your prose. Tell me what you want to do to me. You’re amazing. I want to be with you always and forever.” It’d be cool to feel what it’s like to pee like a girl too. But mostly I’d just rub warm oil all over my Jessica Alba self in front of a tall mirror. I wanna know what it’s like to come like a girl.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Hmm, I’ll have to check. I’m not really sure what that was. It’s pretty damn old though.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Oh, I feel like I’m just getting warmed up. All I want to do is write. But it seems like the more I want to write, the more life gets in the way. Life is funny like that. I’m always trying to bring more emotion. I want to do more romance. I like to show female readers what it’s like to be in a man’s head. I’ve been writing some short stories that focus more on the emotions than the sex. I just finished up one story called Voluntary, and another called The Girl from Reading Center. I created the female characters as a representation of two very real women whom I dated when I was younger. I had to tap into those old feelings of young love to capture that passion. My head is all screwed up now, LOL. I feel like I had an imaginary affair.

Vampire News Book One and Two‏, Collected & Edited by Stavros & Bertena Varney, M.A.M.Ed

Notorious Poet. Fool. Born in Washington DC. Stavros was a writer and editor for The Independent Underground Magazine. Raised in Southern Maryland, he fled the Chesapeake Bay to the wilds of the New Mexican desert. He is a single father of two, whose poetic works have been published in several online and print publications, including Central Avenue, The Sword That Cuts Through Stone, Poets Against The War, Conceptions Southwest, The Mynd, Imagine: Creative Arts Journal, and Bartleby, where he won a specialty award for his poem, Blackbird.

In 1999, he won an Official Selection into the Writer’s on the Edge Festival for his play, The Redline. In 2001, he created the Poetry Television Project for public cable access in Albuquerque, NM. All eight volumes of Ptv’s ground-breaking show were broadcast to over 100,000 viewers on a network of regional PAC channels throughout the Southwest and Baltimore. He helped to launch Unpublished Magazine, sponsored the monthly poetry series, The Word CafĂ©, in the Duke city, and produced a political compilation, Poetic Democracy. In 2007, he released the award-winning documentary film, Committing Poetry in Times of War.

In 2010, he launched the production management company, Organic Ghetto, and released its first imprint, Crazy Duck Press, with his first novel, Blood Junky. Blood Junky received exceptional praise and review, even being called "one of the best vampire novels ever written," by Living Dead Media. The following year he helped to launch BioGamer Girl, undertook a bigger East coast tour where he began selling his original photographic art, and released two new novels through Crazy Duck Press. Dead Girl: A Romantic Zombie Tale of Revenge features a stunning full-color cover and twelve black and white illustrations from tattoo artist, Charles Hearn. Blood Junky’s sequel, Love in Vein, cemented the One Blood series with its continuation of the story, garnering such review as to claim that the book and the series is "comparable with, and at times surpasses, the 'Vampire Chronicles' by Anne Rice."

In 2012, Stavros joined forces with the Vampire Professor, Bertena Varney, M.A.M.Ed, to co-create the nonfiction annual anthology, Vampire News, and officially became a Fangsmith with the creation of Organic Ghetto's second imprint, Kaos Kustom Fangs. He rounded out the year by writing and editing screenplays for the One Blood Transmedia Project, recording Dead Girl as an audio book, and undertaking his biggest national marketing campaign, The Book & Fang Tour.

In 2013, he and the Vampire Professor released the second volume of Vampire News: The (not so) End Times Edition and is currently working on writing and growing his imprints. Stavros is also a musician who has scored commercials, film shorts, documentaries, and television programs.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?

Vampire News in an anthology that I co-produce and co-edit with the Vampire Professor, Bertena Varney. We each have essays and/or articles featured in it along with several other writers. In the new volume, The (not so) End Times Edition, she and I went head to head and reel to reel with our favorite Vampire film picks. It was a lot of fun!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
VN usually takes us about two months to go through all the submission, choose the entries, and get our layout down. But volume 2 took a bit longer due to Amazon’s ignorance over what constitutes graphic text, meaning words that are meant to be seen, rather than read, as images versus text that is just supposed to be read. They literally have taken the concept of art, layout, and design backwards over 100 years.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
That I can do it. I know that may seem simple and weird, but I like that I can twist words into sentences that will elicit an emotional reactions within another person that I have never met and may never know.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
My process. If left up to me it would be completely different. But no. I have to be alone. It has to be absolutely quiet. It can only be in the mornings and will only last for about half the day if I don’t catch a creative rhythm. If I miss this window…it’s nada, nothing, zilch.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Stephen King - Because I would write and publish the most amazing critique and praise for each one of my novels. Just one word from him about me and my small corner of literature in the universe would change my life to where I could make a living as a writer.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
An unfinished jar of Pace salsa. Pace is crap. Ever since I moved to Georgia 7 months ago, I have not been able to find a decent salsa anywhere. Great peaches, but no salsa. It’s been in there since January. I’m still too disappointed to even remove it.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Well, I’m working with Sweet Revolt to bring the adaptation of my book, Love in Vein, (Book Two of the One Blood Series) to the big screen. I’m working on Book Three of the series, and finalizing the details with artist Charles Hearn, who did twelve illustrations for Dead Girl: A Romantic Zombie Tale of Revenge, to adapt the book as a fully fledged graphic novel. And I know I’m a bit late to this, but I’ve just gotten each book turned into an eBook, so I’m figuring out how to market and promote that, because I started out old school with print and paper and meeting people at book fairs and horror conventions, one on one.

Thanks Pembroke for having me here today!

Inside Information

Yesterday, I attended a webinar called "What an Agent Really Thinks While Reading Queries: A Live Query-A-Thon with Literary Agents Kate McKean & Jim McCarthy."  I figured that since I was querying for my YA paranormal fantasy novel and never had any luck before, it couldn't hurt.

I'm not exactly sure what I expected to gain from the webinar.  I had hoped my query would be picked to be critiqued, but it wasn't.  Part of me thought that maybe I would get some inside information, learn some tricks to stand out from the crowd, get a leg up by attending, but I didn't.  I wasn't even inspired.  In fact, I signed off feeling a little depressed.

Don't get me wrong, Kate McKean and Jim McCarthy were awesome!  They explained exactly what they were looking for in queries, and when it came time to critique, they were very kind yet constructive.  I learned a lot about what should/shouldn't be in a query, most of it I already knew, and I edited my recent query using the things they had said.

Still, I didn't feel super excited about what I had learned.  Have you ever been to a writing workshop or conference and walked away wanting to write?  Inspiration hits you in waves and you want nothing more than to dive into that next novel and not stop until it's finished.  Forget eating, forget sleeping, forget human contact.  You've got the desire to write!  I guess I was kind of hoping to feel like that.  I wanted to feel like the knowledge from taking the webinar was going to give me an edge.

Maybe it's just my jaded outlook.  I hate the querying process.  Hate it, hate it, hate it.  It causes me a lot of stress and induces a little bit of panic.  It's such a big publishing world out there, and there are thousands--if not millions--of people trying to break in.  And it's so subjective.  What one person likes, another absolutely hates.  It's also a for-profit business, so agents want to make sure your work is going to make money.  It's hard to stand out.  It's hard to get a second look.

Still, it doesn't stop me from trying.  And it definitely won't stop me from writing.

Even though the webinar depressed me a little, I'm glad I attended.  If nothing else, I got to listen to some really awesome agents talk about their jobs and the query process.  I'll continue to send out my query and keep my fingers crossed that someone somewhere will like it enough to ask for the manuscript.  If that doesn't happen, there are other options.

Lord Alex Stelton can’t resist a challenge, especially one with a prize like this: protect a castle on the Scottish border for a year, and it’s his. Desperate for land of his own, he’ll do anything to win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the rumored witch who lives there.

Feared and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she’d never marry, but she is drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.

Despite his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can’t get the alluring Lisbeth out of his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him. Realizing they’ll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.

1. How did you come up with the idea for The Guardian’s Witch?

I was reading an article about overcoming your greatest fears when those you love are in jeopardy. The premise resonated with me and I was soon plotting the story.

2. How long did it take you to write The Guardian’s Witch?
It took me about five months from start to copy edits.

3. How much research did you conduct for The Guardian’s Witch and what was the most interesting thing you did while conducting your research?
It seems that at every scene there was something to research. I found myself researching how long it would take on horseback from London to the Scottish border and then I never used the information. I also researched witchcraft and second site.

I also researched King James and his interaction with the Scottish lords when the Scottish throne was left empty. It became a pivotal point in my story.

4. Why did you decide to write historical fantasy?
I’ve always been drawn to the past. I find it intriguing, enlightening, and oh so romantic. The brutality of the ancients’ raiding villages to capture wives, the sub servant treatment of women, and the custom of arranged marriages for property, monetary and political alliances are all historically noted. Put that against the code of chivalry and you get a great conflict.

Today’s courting rituals are rooted in medieval chivalry and it was the medieval area that saw the rise of romance in literature and stage productions. Even people who lived in the Middle Ages had their fantasies. I choose to build my stories on their interpretations.

5. Have you had any "ah ha" moments as a writer?
When I started to review my writing and could see the POV changes. I let out a loud whoop that brought my husband running. Head hopping? I can see it! He had no idea what I was talking about. He just shook his head and went back to his office.

The point is I got it. Once I really understood POV I found it a challenge to figure out ways to make the point of view work and I enjoyed writing more.

I also found that I can’t worry about POV when I write the first draft. I needed to get the story all down first. Once it’s written I go over the story for plot and pacing. Then I read it for POV. I love it when a plan comes together!

6. Why did you decide to become an author?
I have always enjoyed telling stories, but I kept them in my head. I would read a story and fantasize about a follow up. But I never thought to write it down or become an author.

A friend of mine told me she was writing a book and I offered to help, edit, be a beta reader, anything. We decided to write a romance series based on the story in her head and the one in mine. We sat down and helped each other outline our stories, talked about the characters, and had a great time being creative. She was training for the New York marathon and doing the college tour thing with her daughter. She just didn’t have time to write. I went on to finish my story.

Once I found that creative outlet I couldn’t stop.

7. If you weren't writing, what would you be doing?
I’d still be making up stories. I don’t think that will ever go away. But if I wasn’t writing I’d have to find another creative outlet. There are all kinds of crafty things I like to do. My favorites are counted cross stitch and scrapbooking. I’d like to learn more about stamping and maybe even quilling.

I also enjoy traveling. I’ve been very fortunate in my day job. I was a product manager for a large financial institution and went around the world doing training seminars and assisting sales on sales calls. There are several places I’d like to go back and visit.

8. How does your family feel about your career as a romance writer?
They’ve always known me to be an avid reader. I think they were surprised that I was writing a novel and even more so when I told them it was a romance. However, I hear them talking about my book to their friends and proudly introduce me as a published author.

When I came back from vacation and bumped into some of their friends in our town, they congratulated me on the audio book. My kids had tweeted their peeps!

9. What books can we expect to see in the near future?
I hope to turn The Guardian’s Witch into a series. Alex is the seventh son of the seventh son. His brothers are dying to tell their story. Each of the brothers is cursed with one of the deadly sins. They must overcome their sin in order to break the family curse. Alex’ sin is pride.

There is also a sequel to Knight of Runes. The working title is Knight of Rapture. Our villain is still at large and must be handled for once and for all. He forces Arik’s hand by tricking Rebeka to return the 21st century. Only Arik can save her but she has no memory of him or their time together. Can he make her fall in love with him again? Will she fight by his side to defeat Bran? Will she return with him to the 17th century?

10. What do you want your readers to take away with them after reading the story?
I want my readers to read lush sensitive tales about women awakening into their power and the men who deserve them.

11. What was the defining moment that you considered yourself an author?
When I signed my first contract. That’s when it all became very real for me.

12. What is the most interesting thing you’ve ever done?
I took belly dancing classes to find my inner goddess. We were a giggling gaggle of women but once we got on the dance floor we were in a different world. It freed the spirit and let you soar.

Julia Taylor works as a recruitment consultant for Paranormal Personnel in London. Her days at work seem normal, she sees clients that regularly are looking for work, she source new vacancies, updates CV and visits employers.

Everything is pretty ordinary for her, apart from the fact that Julia is half elf and Paranormal Personnel is not an ordinary agency at all because all jobless supernatural creatures come to the agency to look for work. Fairies, vampires, witches, hags, wizards, mermaids, elves, giants and trolls, they all need to find employment and during this economic climate this seems pretty challenging.

Julia doesn’t want her life to be complicated but when her day is interrupted by the shape shifter with the chain saw; she just has to deal with him as she always does. She is normally calm, confident and is not afraid to stand up for herself but when the meeting with Nathaniel’s Corporation goes not as well as she expected she wants to bury herself under the ground and die.

Then Mr. La Caz gets under her skin, lights up a fire inside her, she accidently reads his thoughts and learns that he craves for her, he wants to suck her dry but she is convinced that he is not even a vampire.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Currently I still work as an employment advisor for a private welfare organization. We always have morning meetings before 9 o’clock. During one very dull meeting, which was about self employment, I completely switched off and started thinking about really random stuff. Suddenly I had this idea in my head, what if I can write a book about the recruitment agency for all the supernatural creatures? When I left the room all these images started coming to me and I knew that I had to start writing it straight away.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I thought it would take me a few months to write this story but just after a month the books was ready. I really enjoyed writing £6.19 per Witching hour.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
That I can create my own world and decide what is going to happen to my characters.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
That I have to keep writing even if I don’t want to and I have million others things to do.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
JK Rowling, because she has an incredible talent.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Champagne, its twelve years old.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I am working on a new adult contemporary romance right now and after that I will be working on the sequel to Paranormal Personnel.

Rylee Thomas is used to being in control. But she’s about to meet the one man that just might make her enjoy losing it…

I am the exception to the rule.

In a world full of willing women, I’m a challenge to the roguish and achingly handsome Colton Donavan. A man used to getting exactly what he wants in all aspects of life. He’s the reckless bad boy constantly skating that razor thin edge toward out of control, on and off of the track.

Colton crashes into my life like a tornado: sapping my control, testing my vulnerabilities beyond their limits, and unintentionally penetrating the protective wall around my healing heart. Tearing apart the world I rebuilt so carefully with structure, predictability, and discipline.

I can’t give him what he wants and he can’t give me what I need. But after a glimpse beneath his refined exterior into the dark secrets of his damaged soul, can I bring myself to walk away?

Our sexual chemistry is undeniable. Our individual need for complete control is irrefutable. But when our worlds collide, is the chemistry enough to bring us together or will our untold secrets and battle of wills force us apart?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
In all honesty, I’m not quite sure. Rylee and Colton kind of jumped in my head and the ideas kept building and building until I started outlining. It wasn’t one specific event, just something that I felt could be a really good story if I could do the ideas in my head justice when I transferred them to paper.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Driven took me about 4 months to write. But with that said, my original version off of my outline ended up being 800+ pages. So I had to readjust the book and move almost half into the second book of The Driven Trilogy, Fueled. So it took me 4 months but that was for 1 and 2/3 books. Editing for me is what takes the longest amount of time. I usually write about 50 pages and then spend the next 3 days reading and rereading those 50 pages to make sure they are clean and precise.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I like the unexpected. I am a total planner and outline everything…but sometimes when I am writing a scene, something pops into my head and it’s incredible. It’s that one thing that elevates a scene to the next level or makes it just that much better. Those unexpected moments—the ones you can’t plan for—are the ones that make the book jump off the page and into the reader’s mind.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
As with any writer, when the words just don’t come to your keyboard, that’s the worst. It’s frustrating to see it all in your head, but when you type, it’s not how you imagined it and for the life of you, you can’t find a way to get it there. That’s the worst!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
That’s a tough one! I think I’d like to be Nora Roberts. The woman churns out books like there is no tomorrow. She makes it look effortless and I’d love to be inside her head to see her thought process in how she approaches a novel, outlines her characters, processes ideas and plotlines…I know it’s not very fascinating but I’m still learning this process and would like to see how a veteran does it.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
The oldest thing in my refrigerator has to be a little jar of maraschino cherries. I think I bought them forever ago to make sundaes for my kids and we never used them all. Besides that, I’m pretty anal about my fridge. I certainly don’t want to put new/fresh food in with old, nasty food. (I’m kind of a clean freak :))

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Readers can expect the next two books on The Driven Trilogy. Fueled will be released in August and Crashed will be towards the end of the year. Besides those books, I have some ideas for some stand alone novels that are starting to fill my head. But more….definitely more from me in the future.

Alice Shepard needs one thing: a date for her sister's wedding. And not just any date. A hunk who will make her fiancĂ© rue the day he left her for her best friend. Her drop-dead gorgeous neighbor fits the bill—even if he is a bit quirky and never comes out during the day—and Alice has downed just enough appletinis to ask him. But she makes it quite clear that there will be no funny business.

Spending a week on a cruise ship full of humans while sleeping close to his sexy next-door neighbor sounds like a helluva bad idea to vampire Noah Thorpe. But his friends need time to get him out of a shotgun wedding—a vampire bonding that will tie his fate to a female vampire he's never met. And Alice's offer comes at just the right time.

What could possibly go wrong?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
When my publisher, Entangled Publishing, decided to launch their new Covet line—described as contemporary romances with a dash of paranormal—I found myself inspired. I thought it sounded like such a fun challenge. The idea of taking familiar romance tropes (like the guy next door) and twisting them in with paranormal ideas was something I found immediately inspiring.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I can’t remember exactly how long it took since I wrote Don’t Bite the Bridesmaid nearly a year ago. But it was pretty quick for me because it was one of those rare stories that sort of poured out of my brain. I think the initial draft took a couple of months (not counting revising or editing).

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating something from nothing is probably my favorite thing about writing. And those eureka moments where a solution or idea comes to mind that brings a story together in a way I couldn’t envision while writing the outline. Nothing is better than that feeling. :)

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The days when the words don’t flow, and I have to drag them out of my brain one by one.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Some leftover pizza from last week. Yeah…need to toss that.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I am currently hard at work drafting the second book in the Sons of Kane series. I recently finished the second round of edits for a new book coming out in October from the Entangled Suspense line. It is a paranormal romantic suspense novel called Temptation by Fire, and while it’s a slightly darker story than Don’t Bite the Bridesmaid, it does have its humorous moments as well. And the fourth book in my From the Files of the Otherworlder Enforcement Agency series, Vampire Games, is coming out in August.

Whew! No wonder I’m so tired, haha.

Obsession by Sofia Grey

Romance author Sofia Grey spends her days managing projects in the corporate world and her nights hanging out with wolf shifters and alpha males. She devours pretty much anything in the fiction line, but she prefers her romances to be hot, and her heroes to have hidden depths. When writing, she enjoys peeling back the layers to expose her characters’ flaws and always makes them work hard for their happy endings.

Josh Delaney is the ideal honey trap. His charm and model good looks would be enough for most women, but coupled with his psychic ability to read their thoughts, he’s impossible to resist. Suspicious husbands employ him to test their wives, to see if they can be tempted to stray.

High profile couple Suki and Gabe Bridgewater have the perfect marriage, or at least, that’s the image they portray to the world. Behind closed doors, Gabe’s dominance in the marriage is unravelling and he decides to test Suki, using Josh as bait.

For Josh it should be just another easy job, but two things go horribly wrong.

One, Josh falls in love with Suki.

And two, Gabe refuses to let her go.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I read a magazine article about a celebrity family, living their perfectly happy life in their gorgeous house, and I wondered what it would be like when they closed the doors. The idea of peeling back the layers to expose the reality fascinated me. What if they fought like cat and dog in private, but had to smile and play nicely for the media?

The idea of Josh Delaney as a character had been brewing for a while, and this was the ideal opportunity to introduce him.

The Grey Mansion that features so prominently is a real house that I’ve gazed at many times from a distance and it features throughout the entire series as the paranormal story arc develops. I’ve no idea who owns it or lives there and I’d love to speak to the owners some day. Like Josh Delaney, I find the place utterly mesmerizing.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first draft took around three months, then there were multiple revisions and tweaks before it finally went to Time & Tide Publishing.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love starting a new story, creating fresh and vibrant characters, and tricky situations for them. The whole time from a-spark-of-an-idea to writing the first chapter is exciting. I especially love that first moment when the vague idea crystallizes into a real plot with potential.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Revisions… and when you think the revisions are all done, finding a typo half way through and having to go back and check it all again…

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Hmmm… how about whichever actress happened to be starring in a romantic movie with Ian Somerhalder? I’d have to snog him… * swoon * It might take a lot of practicing…

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Okay, I had to actually go and check: it’s the remnants of a bottle of peach schnapps. We bought it a couple of years ago on a trip to the South Island of New Zealand.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Obsession is book #1 in the Talisman series and hopefully book #2, Craving, will be out towards the end of the year. I also have the first in a shifter series (Wolf At The Door, Snowdonia Wolves #1) that was released a month ago, and plan to have the second in that series coming out this year too.

This was a fun interview, thank you.
